Yoga
When most people think of yoga, they think of contortionists twisting their bodies into seemingly uncomfortable pretzel-like postures. Others may view yoga as spiritual enlightenment or at least a means to achieve mental clarity in their daily lives. Depending on your perception, yoga can be both.
The term 'yoga' is a Sanskrit word meaning 'to unite.' This can mean to unite the oneness of the mind, body, and spirit, or oneness with the cosmos. Either way, yoga can be beneficial on virtually all levels of being.
The most common type of yoga practice in the west is called Hatha Yoga. This is the familiar stretching and posture positions seen in virtually all yoga schools and videos. But yoga need not be limited to a physical dimension. There are many other common practices of yoga that range from very physically demanding postures, to breathing techniques, to meditative forms. All are considered part of the great tree of yoga.
Performing yoga exercises have proven to be beneficial for the mind, body, and spirit alike. Science tells us that yoga is beneficial for correcting a number of ailments: breathing problems, cancer relief, epileptic control, weight problems, circulation, and general longevity. Yoga is also a great alternative to high-impact exercise regiments. Best of all, yoga can be practiced virtually anywhere and by anyone. Seniors, children, male and female, all can enjoy the benefits of yoga.
