Yoga Mat

yoga mat

In hatha yoga, yoga mats are generally consider the most essential tool. A yoga mat provides the yoga practitioner a non-slip surface which adds stability to the yoga postures. Feet, hands, and elbows all remain where they should be without slippage. This friction enables one to deepen the postures without the fear of sliding and slipping. Yoga mats also provide a warm insulation and clean surface between the practitioner and the floor.

The most common mats are made of a simple, non-slip rubber material. These are very durable and light weight. For a more customized yoga mat, many manufacturers are producing mats that have a rubber underside with a fabric weave on the top surface, thus ensuring a tight grip to the floor, and a comfortable non-slip surface under the foot.

To care for your yoga mat, lightly spray the soiled surface with water, then wipe dry with a clean towel. For heavier soiling, wash the mat in a tub of cool water and mild detergent. Make sure to use only a small amount of soap to prevent slippery residue from forming. Let mat air dry completely before use.
