Yoga Classes
After deciding which yoga style to pursue, finding the right yoga class becomes the next step. Many gyms now offer yoga classes as part of their curriculum. This can be very convenient, since gyms have become the center of physical exercise across the country. There are, however, some drawbacks to attending yoga classes at a gym instead of a dedicated yoga studio. The pace, for instance, of a gym is typically fast and competitive which can be counterproductive to quality yoga practice. Another drawback is the fact that many gyms may not have multiple classes to handle the various yoga levels. This can result in being trapped in an eternally 'beginner's' class despite your development.
Standard yoga centers are the next obvious choice to find a dedicated yoga class. There you can usually find an instructor who has dedicated a good portion of their life to yoga, and can therefore impart their wisdom on you without the distractions of a gym.
A good yoga instructor should be patient, confident, agile, and respectful to your needs. Avoid yoga instructors who are overconfident, cocky, elitist, or disrespectful of your particular needs.
If all else fails, or there is not a competent yoga class in your area, yoga products like yoga DVD's, relaxation music, and yoga books can get you started until you locate a suitable yoga class.
