Kripalu Yoga

kripalu yoga

Kripalu yoga places great emphasis on proper breath, alignment, coordination of breath and movement, and 'honoring the wisdom of the body.' Students of Kripalu yoga are encouraged to focus on the physical and psychological reactions caused by various postures in order to develop their awareness of mind, body, emotion and spirit. Since Kripalu yoga is usually envisioned as a whole body, whole life experience, there are many yoga centers that offer retreats to fully engage in Kripalu yoga. The result is meant to be a better understanding of one's self that can be taken back to the everyday world.

There are basically three stages of Kripalu yoga:

  1. Exploration of postures and the body's physical abilities. Standard Hatha yoga poses will be explored here in order to get a basic understanding of the body.

  2. Endurance and concentration during the postures. Development of inner awareness is developed as the students concentrate on each pose and try to understand how each posture is effecting them physically and emotionally.

  3. Encouragement of students to flow in and out of postures spontaneously.
At this level, the postures become a type of free-flowing meditation where constant, spontaneous motion is emphasized. There is no set routine at this level, there is only self awareness of what the body and mind desire.

Kripalu yoga can best be summed up as a middle ground between the two extremes of yoga practice; Hatha (the mere physical) and Raja (the purely meditative). Kripalu yoga combines the best of both worlds at a level that the everyday person can enjoy.
