Yoga and Weight Loss

Yoga and weight loss; does it really work? The answer is mostly yes. While yoga and weight loss aren't necessarily exclusive to each other, yoga can significantly aid the weight loss endeavor. Yoga can tone muscle, maintain flexibility, improve coordination, and eliminate stress. To really lose weight, one must engage in aerobic activity of some sort (running, biking, swimming, etc.) for 20-30 minutes 3-5 times a week to be truly effective. But this doesn't mean yoga should be completely eliminated from this equation.

There are two basic principles that enable yoga to work towards weight loss. One is of course the exercise and all of its benefits, the other is diet. A true yoga diet is completely vegetarian. That means no meat, fish or eggs. Fried and spicy foods and all caffeinated beverages like coffee, tea, and cola are also prohibited. Eliminating these fatty, high cholesterol, and over-stimulating foods can significantly drop the weight off. This combined with steady yoga exercises can create a well balanced lifestyle, and that is the most important factor in any weight loss program.

So, while yoga may not be the ultimate weight loss vehicle, it is definitely the best suited to prepare your body and mind for the lifestyle changes necessary to make a more strenuous exercise plan and diet be effective. Without the discipline, clarity of mind, muscle conditioning and self control yoga gives you, any weight loss program will ultimately fail.
