Yoga Clothes

Wearing the right yoga clothes can mean the difference between a great yogic experience and a terrible one. Most yoga instructors will tell you to either wear very loose clothes, or very form-fitting clothes (not tight, there is a difference). Wearing yoga clothes that are too tight, such as tight jeans, or a t-shirt that is too small will inhibit your movement and therefore constrict proper muscle tension and body positioning. Form-fitting yoga clothes such as leotard (or yogatard as they are called in yoga) are suitable because, while they fit snug against the body, they do not inhibit movement. Form-fitting yoga wear stretches with the body while remaining free from entanglement.

The other option is very loose yoga clothing. Yoga wear that is loose, such as sweats, karate pants, or specialized yoga pants, allow for a more comfortable range of motion (as well as emotional comfort for those of us not yet ready to show off our bodies to the world). Once again, be careful not to wear clothes that are 'too' loose. Clothes that are excessively baggy or loose can become entangled with limbs as well as impede vision or breathing when they fall over your face.

Some of the more traditional yoga schools even demand that you wear next to nothing at all. Most in the west, however, are not ready for that kind of commitment. But as you can imagine, these schools are far and few between. After all, yoga is about how you practice, not what you wear or don't wear.
